More Information for Prospective Referees

Bellaire, TX

updated Spring 2008

Here is what information I can give you about putting your referee services to use for Bellaire Soccer Club.

Bellaire Soccer Club website:

One way we get news out to referees is at our website. Check it at www.bellairesoccerclub.org  The main page will have alerts on it. There is a referees page as well. It doesn't always have urgent news, but it does give you some of the basics and the main places to go to get information.

Email list of our club referee assignor

Marsha Zimmermann can be reached at 713-660-9332 or email bsc.ref.assignor@gmail.com

Who the main referee assignors are:

There are two people who schedule referees, and here is how to contact them. This is easy to keep track of in your mind if you look at who is responsible for scheduling the referees for games.

We call them: "club-assigned games" and "HYSA-assigned games."

Also, each set of games has different levels of responsibility, so you may need to start with easier jobs with less responsibility until you gain more confidence and also the confidence of the person who assigns the games.

Club-assigned games are all at Bellaire Soccer Club fields - Pin Oak or Feld park:

They are:

The referee assignor is Mark and Marsha Zimmermann. The assignor sends out an email the week before games to the list of club referees. Referees reply back and tell their preferences for games. Then the assignor makes the assignments and lets you know by email. You need to be sure to make the game if you are assigned a game. Before the season begins the assignor sends an email out to everyone asking for certain information in order to have a good, accurate list.

Marsha Zimmermann can be reached at 713-660-9332 or email bsc.ref.assignor@gmail.com

Be willing to take any job, as it is all a learning experience. Experienced adults have been AR for U9 games, so don't expect only the best assignments.

The club pays $26 for centering U10 and younger games and $13.00 for AR any age up to U14. Checks are mailed to you every couple of months.

HYSA-assigned games are at away fields - Never at Pin Oak:
HYSA website: www.hysa.us

The club has a quota of positions that it must meet every season, or none of our teams are allowed to go to playoffs. This is called our "quota." So it is very important for us to have referees who are skilled enough to work these games, and who are willing to do them.

You are not allowed to work any game that a Bellaire team is playing in. The schedule is posted on the Arbiter website. Log in, look at the schedule and send an email the HYSA referee assignor telling what game(s) you are willing to work. You will receive a confirming email when you are assigned to a game. You must "accept" or "decline" the assignment online through the website.

You choose games that are the level you think you can do and make a request to the HYSA referee assignor, who will make the assignments.

They are:

U11-U14 are mostly Saturdays and U15+ are mostly Sundays. The best way to start is to work U15+ ARs.

You should plan in advance and send your requests to Gary Duke who is with HYSA. His title is "HYSA assignor," and his email is at the top of the page of each week's schedule. It is assignor@hysa.us

Look at the schedule an if there are games you think you could do, then send an email to her and tell her you are a new referee for Bellaire and what games you want to work.

HYSA pays referees for its games at the end of the season only. Scale is $40 for center U15+, $26 for center U11-U14, $20 for AR U15+

Preseason:

You want to keep your eyes and ears open for the "Mandatory HYSA referees meetings" which are held a few weeks before the fall season starts. They are usually at Bayland Park. These are very important because this is how you are sure to get on HYSA's list of eligible referees. They tell you the ins-and-outs and the do-s and don'ts. They also get you to put your name on a list and provide certain information about yourself. Be sure you get that.

There is not a spring preseason meeting.  Make contact with our referee assignor as we stay in the loop mostly via email and personal contact.

I hope this all helps you learn how to put your skills to work.
